The wool obtained from the fur of cashmere goats belongs in the luxury yarn category due to its special properties and softness.
Origin
The cashmere goat comes from the Kashmir region in South Asia and Nepal. There are around 20 species of cashmere goat. These species of goats require certain weather conditions, they are kept at around 4000 meters in areas with harsh winters, so the wool achieves the desired quality.
Qualities
Cashmere feels especially soft on the skin. Moreover, the wool also scores with its warming properties. In addition, moisture is quickly absorbed and fed back to the environment. Cashmere wool is water and dirt repellent and hardly absorbs odours. Despite its delicate fibres the wool is strong and tear proof.
Production
Towards the end of winter or start of spring the goats are extensively combed. Shearing them is also a possibility, albeit less comfortable for the animal. In the Wollsalon, we exclusively have combed cashmere wool. After the combing the fibres are sorted by colours and they are washed. In the third step the outer and inner coat and separated using a machine. For further processing only the particularly soft undercoat is used.
Protection and Care
It is often enough to ventilate the knit in fresh air overnight. You should only wash the knits if you really need to – either in the wool wash cycle at a maximum of 30 degrees or by hand with wool detergent. Do not scrub or wring but only move lightly in the water. Remaining moisture can be gently squeezed using a soft towel.
Conservation
Pay close attention to how the cashmere wool production takes place. Particularly in places like China and Mongolia the animals are often kept in huge herds which makes it impossible to give each animal enough attention and care. They are often shorn too often and too early which can lead to skin diseases. The cashmere wool available at the Wollsalon come exclusively from small productions and are combed out.
