Wool from fine camel hair is similarly soft as cashmere wool and also has other great properties.
Origin
The fine, high-quality camel wool comes from the two-humped camel, which is mainly found in western China and outer Mongolia as well as being native in countries with very harsh climates.
Qualities
Camel hair wool has excellent heat properties and offers a first-class thermoregulation. The hair has a silky sheen and is very smooth and fine in structure. It is also known for excellent moisture transport and acclimatizing properties.
Production
Camels are not shorn, instead they regularly lose their wool hair in large tufts which are collected by hand. The subsequent carding separates the silky, shiny fine undercoat hair from the firm guard hairs. This process is known as deburring.
Protection and Care
Camel hair wool should be ventilated frequently as this allows for a natural cleaning process. Washing should only be done by hand with wool detergent and at temperatures that do not exceed 30 degrees. Don’t wring or rub camel hair but only move it lightly and carefully in the water.
Conservation
Animal rights activists particularly like camel wool as the fur naturally falls off the animals so there is no sheering process. As the bottom line, only the fur that the animals lose naturally is collected, cleaned and processed into fluffy wool.
